Cassie suggests a walk once we’re both wrapped in warm layers, so I give her a tour of the area. The house isn’t in a traditional neighborhood setting. We’re settled on a long stretch of road with nothing but farmland and two other homes in view. There’s a larger subdivision just over a hill to the south, but it’s out of site from our yard, making us feel as though we’re away from civilization instead of twenty minutes from a college town.

“I like the feeling you get here. Like you’re way out in the country by yourself, even though you’re not.” She crosses the road from our house and walks toward my neighbor’s split wood fence. Their farmhouse sits back away from the road with smoke puffing from their fireplace. It’s a postcard scene—snowy farm, beautiful home. “I want that.” Cassie leans against the fence and props a booted foot on the bottom rail.

Digging my cell from my pocket, I pull up my camera. Her dark hair against Mindy’s light blue ski jacket and hat, along with the winter background, provides a compelling shot. I take it. I want that.

“Hey,” she turns, her arm waving me away. “No pictures.”

I look at my screen zooming in on her face. Her profile holds such emotion. Her dreams appear to be sitting right there in her features on display for only me. “What do you want for your life?” I ask, walking to her side and ignoring her protest about the pictures as I snap another shot.

She frowns, looking at me from under angry lowered lashes. It’s not a real angry look, it’s her frustrated-with-Austin look. I’ve seen it a few times now. I hope it’s only for me, because it’s adorable as hell.

“That. The simple life.” Her voice is wistful as she turns back to the house and farm.

“You want to live in the country?”

“Yeah, I think so.” She kicks at the rail causing snow to slide off from the top. “I moved around so much growing up. I want some roots, and what better way to grow roots than out here?”

Her answer gives me the perfect opportunity to ask questions. With a deep breath, I dive in. “You have no family? Other than your mother, I mean?”

Her gloved hands wrap around the fence post. “Nope.”

What would that be like? Moving all the time, no family, a mother who obviously isn’t worth much. My own upbringing makes me feel guilty compared to hers. Why do some of us get so much and others so little?

“You know, West is the one who cursed life for taking away our mother. I’ve always been thankful that I had her as long I did. So much of who I am is because of her. I’m sorry you didn’t have that growing up.” It’s an intimate thought, probably best left unsaid. I don’t want to make her feel bad, but I can’t help myself.

Cassie chews at her lip, something she does a lot when she’s thinking, as her eyes remain on the farmhouse in the distance.
